Artist Statement:
Whenever I have made plans for a trip and later thought back on it, I found the biggest impressions were created on the way to the destination- during the unexpected moments. I find creating my paintings are a metaphor for my life; each one takes me on a journey where I embrace the duality of the planned with the accidental.
I use my background as a textile designer to recreate and call attention to already existing patterns, natural as well as man made, that I notice wherever I go.
These common everyday encounters with repeated lines, shapes and abstract forms symbolize nothing more than their very own existence, and are relatable and easily identifiable enabling the viewer to see how much in common we share in a world where too often the focus is on our differences.
Using oil paints on linen, I incorporate darkness and shadow with light and reflection to create patterns within these patterns. I juxtapose transparency with opaques, patterns with solid shapes , use neutral colors next to vibrant ones - opposing elements that are universally common in their diversity. Repeating shapes, lines and patterns, I find abstract forms in realistic images, creating my own interpretation of hyperrealism painting.
My artistic influences and inspirations are varied from Matisse to Schiele to Kunisada, and countless others I am still discovering.
